These results indicate intercropping eggplant and garlic was a practical solution for reducing TSSM on eggplant, promoting the abundance of predators, and improving the crop yields of eggplant and garlic compared with the sole crops.Ībad MKR, Fathi SAA, Nouri-Ganbalani G, Amiri-Besheli B (2019) Effects of strip intercropping of eggplant with soybean on densities of two-spotted spider mite tetranychus urticae, species diversity of its natural enemies, and crop yield. In addition, a significant improvement in the yield per unit area of eggplant and garlic was obtained in intercrops compared with sole crops. Greater values of the Shannon diversity index and the Pielou’s evenness index for the construction of TSSM predators were recorded in the three intercrops compared with the sole eggplant over both growing seasons. The abundance of Chrysoperla carnea was not significant among treatments. The density of Orius niger was higher in the three intercrops compared with the sole crop on vegetative growth and flowering to initial fruit set stages of eggplants. The abundance of Stethorus gilvifrons was lower in the three intercrops than in the sole crop on the blooming-initial fruit set and the fruit development stages of eggplant. The damage index by TSSM on eggplants was lower in intercrops (8.1–11.5%) compared with sole crop (37.0–40.3%) in the two seasons. In three intercrops, a significant decrease in the density of TSSM egg and mobile stages was observed compared with the sole eggplant at each growth stage of eggplant. In this study, the impact of intercropping eggplant (E) ( Solanum melongena L.) and garlic (G) ( Allium sativum L.) in three designs – with row ratios of 4E:4G, 4E:8G, or 4E:12G – was assessed on the density of the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM) ( Tetranychus urticae Koch), the abundance and diversity of predators, and crop yields, compared with the sole crops over two growing seasons of 20. Repellent plants (releasing volatile organic compounds as arthropod repellents and providing alternative prey for natural enemies) may be used in an intercropping system for pest control however, little is known concerning their relative priority. Diversification of cultivation systems plays a critical role in ecosystem functions such as pest control, diversity of beneficial arthropods, and soil fertility.

William Styron’s soul-shattering story of an ethereally beautiful concentration camp survivor is brought to life on screen by Meryl Streep. Today, genre fans are likely to fondly remember Chopping Mall for the fact that it contains one of the greatest single practical effects of the era the graphic explosion of Suzee Slater’s head, followed by the robot’s wry line of “Thank you, have a nice day.” You’ve gotta love it. The cast gives us Kelli Maroney, who also appears in the similarly teen-inflected Night of the Comet, and Roger Corman regular Dick Miller as the janitor, once again playing his signature role: “ Dawn of the Dead, except with much more gallows humor. Little do they know, however, that the mall recently unveiled a new fleet of deadly efficient security robots that are, shall we say, more than a little twitchy. The premise is irresistible pulp, dressed in ’80s neon teen fashion-a group of kids hide out in the mall past closing time so they can party (and score) in one of the furniture stores overnight. Stars: Kelli Maroney, Tony O’Dell, John Terlesky, Suzee Slater, Barbara Crampton, Russell ToddĬalling Chopping Mall the best film by director Jim Wynorski isn’t saying much-at all-but it remains a minor ’80s horror/sci-fi classic despite that. Instead, it’s content to serve as a potent reminder that tentative first steps can be every bit as narratively compelling as great leaps of faith. Cretton’s clear-eyed film is far too honest to try and convince us that there’s been any sort of profound change for Grace or anyone else. And while everything seemingly comes to a head during a key crisis, it’s only fitting that the story ends with a denouement that bookends its opening. By allowing his characters’ irrational emotions to influence events and instigate key turning points, Cretton capably masks the film’s finely calibrated story mechanics. In fact, the film serves as a fine example of how invisible screenwriting can be. Stars: Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr., Kaitlyn Dever, Rami Malek, Alex Calloway, Lakeith StanfieldĪs it progresses, Short Term 12 remains rigorously structured in terms of plot yet it never feels calculated. Even though the band hadn’t played live in ages, and despite Layne’s fragility, they were certainly as good as ever on MTV Unplugged.Ī cluster of new material lies on the back end. Layne absolutely wails on “Got Me Wrong” from Sap, and if you want intensity then check out “Would?”. Sean Kinney’s marching band style drums give a slight military feel. It’s a song about Jerry’s dad, a Vietnam vet. “Rooster” too is more peaceful, though an undercurrent of angst is always present. “Angry Chair” is one of Alice in Chains’ heaviest songs to hear it unplugged is strange but oddly appropriate. Layne clearly poured himself into the song. Though was well received, “Down in a Hole” from Dirt earns more shouts of familiarity. (The other four were opening for Kiss, who also had an Unplugged album in 1996.) “Sludge Factory” is a difficult song from a murky album. They played only five shows Unplugged was the first. Due to Layne’s health, Alice were unable to tour in ’95-’96. Right after a lil’ bit of “Enter Sandman”, Alice in Chains do the newbie “Sludge Factory” for the first time ever. “No Excuses” is perfect, and just listen to the percussion work of Sean Kinney!Ī number of album tracks, better known as heavy electric songs, are next. They could do multiple takes, but one of them has to be perfect. The big single from Jar of Flies, “No Excuses” rounds out this trio. Their vocal blend was Alice’s most defining feature. “Brother” from Sap is next a showcase for the harmonies of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. The eerie quiet of the audience only adds to the tension. For this show, Alice added guitarist Scott Olsen to free up Jerry Cantrell’s hands to solo. It sets a dark, quiet tone that follows through the whole album. “Nutshell” from Jar of Flies is a brilliant opener. Their Unplugged focuses on mellow(ish) moments from everything but their debut, Facelift. At least in the early days, you could count on an acoustic EP between electric albums. It’s somewhat strange that Alice’s first live album was an acoustic performance, but they have always been a two sided band. Certainly Kiss’ instalment is up there, and so is Alice in Chains’. MTV’s Unplugged series is responsible for some of the best live albums you’ll find. If that happens here, we will line up Rainier Fog for a re-review.ĪLICE IN CHAINS – MTV Unplugged (1996 Sony) They exist and when they do, they often become favourites. Perhaps Rainer Fog is one of those albums that doesn’t click until the 100th listen. These foundations support a collection of well written songs. Riffs are constructed from the strongest mortar. Little guitar hooks snake in and out of verses, cool as hell. There are verses, choruses, melodies and all the accoutrements. Rainier Fog is terribly conventional by comparison with Dirt. Staley seemed to bring an unschooled approach, completely unafraid to make unconventional music. What’s the issue? Is it that we’ve heard all this before? Ever since the passing of Layne Staley, Alice In Chains lost that certain “fucked up” quality to their music. From there on, the songs are less memorable, with the exception of “Never Fade” which has a chorus that goes on for miles. It’s also not the fault of the lead track, “The One You Know” which is a terrific starter. It’s not singer William Duvall - this is his third album with Alice In Chains, and he’s done an admirable job every time out. It’s hard to put a finger on exactly why Rainier Fog lacks the same impact. It’s especially disappointing since their last platter, 2013’s The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, was so crushingly perfect. Such is the case with the latest Alice In Chains, Rainier Fog. "He didn't seem too enthusiastic, but I think that was because he wasn't at all sure of his own ability. It’s always disappointing when you give a new album a fair shot, but it refuses to stay in your skull. "After he'd sung his song, for which we charge $4 for recording, we said maybe we'd call him over sometime to cut a commercial disc," said Phillips' brother and Sun Records co-founder Jud Phillips. Presley recorded his two songs to little fanfare and went on his way. I said, 'What kind of singer are you?' He said, 'I sing all kinds.' I said, 'Who do you sound like?' He said, 'I don't sound like nobody.'" While he was waiting, we had a conversation. I told him he'd have to wait and he said OK. He came in, said he wanted to make a record. "The office was full of people wanting to make personal records. "It was a busy Saturday afternoon," Keisker told Q magazine in 2000. Keisker's exchange with the future star has since become the stuff of legend. That honor went to his assistant, Marion Keisker, who was reportedly running the studio alone on that fateful day. Yet it wasn't Phillips who initially worked with Presley. Ill health forced Stieglitz to cease taking pictures in the late 1930s but he continued to attend his New York gallery up to his death. In the 1920s and 1930s his work consisted largely of a series of portraits of Georgia O'Keeffe and his ‘equivalents’ – pictures of sun and clouds that transcend form to reflect the artist's own hopes and fears. Among his best-known earlier works are The Terminal (1893), an atmospheric study of a horse-drawn tram in the snow, and The Steerage (1907), a poignant view of passenger decks on a ship. Stieglitz was an adherent of ‘straight photography’ with a minimum of darkroom trickery. Following the closure of ‘291’ in 1917, he set up The Intimate Gallery (1925–29) and in 1930 An American Place opened on Madison Avenue. Thus it was Stieglitz who first exposed the American public to the ‘shock of the new’. Pictorialism is an international style and aesthetic movement that dominated photography during the later 19th and early 20th centuries. Known as ‘291’, the gallery exhibited not only photographs but also modern paintings and sculpture, with work by Rodin, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso, as well as contemporary US painters, such as Max Weber and Georgia O'Keeffe, whom Stieglitz married in 1924. 'The Black Bowl', by George Seeley, circa 1907.Published in Camera Work, No 20 (1907). Alfred Stieglitz was a renowned photographer who contributed greatly to the development of Modernism during the 20th century.Championing photography as an art form at a time when it was considered a mere form of documentation, he co-founded the journal Camera Work with Edward Steichen and passionately defended the importance of the medium. Stieglitz opened Little Galleries at 291 Fifth Avenue, New York, in 1905. In 1902, he and a group of fellow photographers, including Edward Steichen, formed Photo-Secession with the aim of establishing photography as art through exhibitions and the quarterly Camera Work. In 1890 he returned to the USA and in the years following he edited American Amateur Photographer, won a host of prizes with his work, and gained an international reputation. He experimented with such innovations as night-time photography and working in rain and snow. Sometime in late 1892, Alfred Stieglitz bought his first handheld camera (a 4×5 large-format film camera). From the outset, Stieglitz was determined that photography should be recognized as a legitimate art form. Don’t think about your photography as art only your subjective vision and interpretation of the world. Here he purchased his first camera and straightaway switched to courses in photochemistry relevant to photography. Stieglitz was born in New Jersey, the son of a wool merchant, and initially studied engineering, first in New York and then (in 1881) in Berlin. US photographer who established photography as a fine art in the USA and, through his galleries and publications, introduced Americans to modern art. If you come in with an expensive item we get your thumb prints, we get your ID and we turn it into the police or the FBI, but very rarely an idiot does that, yep, and I end up losing all the money on it. RICK: It rarely happens, I mean you’ve gotta be a real idiot to do it. Has anyone ever come into the store with stolen goods? It happens, but it’s a part of the business, you know, no guts no glory! Sometimes you strike out. I remember like twenty years ago I bought a book for twenty thousand dollars, which was supposedly signed by Shoeless Joe Jackson (Baseball player from early 1900s) which turned out to be fake. RICK: There’s been plenty of things where stuff hasn’t worked out, and you know, it’s sort of the nature of my business. What’s the worst item where you lost a lot of money? There’s a book which outlines a prediction that computers will be smarter than people in like twenty years, so it’s a really weird world we’re going into and I could just nerd out for hours about how robots are slowly taking all the jobs away! But I think the whole Quantum computing thing is going to change a lot of stuff. RICK: That’s a tough one! Quantum computing. In 20 years, what do you predict is going to be the next big thing that everyone will want to collect? They spent like a gazillion dollars on this super transparent glass and everyone had to social distance, when we weren’t filming everyone wore masks and what should have taken three months to film, actually took six months. RICK: This season literally had to be filmed with flexiglass between us and the customers. So what did Rick Harrison and Chumlee have to say about the new season, and what they’ve been up to in lockdown? Read on to find out! How has the pandemic impacted filming? You can watch the new episodes on BLAZE, Freesat channel 162, weeknights at 7pm! He realizes the Mandalorian is looking for work and invites him for a seat. This catches the Mandalorian's attention. The Mandalorian is being watched by a human man, who calls the bartendress droid a "tin can" and tells her to think again. The droid responds that she is afraid that will not improve his prospects by any calculation. The Mandalorian replies that he is not looking for Guild work. The bartendress droid says that the Bounty Hunters' Guild is no longer operating on Tatooine. The Mandalorian tells the bartendress droid that he is looking for some work. The bar is frequented by several aliens and even droids including R5-D4. Meanwhile, the Mandalorian enters Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina, which is being serviced by an EV-series supervisor droid bartendress. She playfully teases him, referring to him as "bright eyes." She tells the Child that she will look after him until the Mandalorian gets back and then she is going to charge him extra for watching him. She asks the Child if he would like some food and gets the pit droids to fetch him something to eat, preferably something with bones. she asks the Child if that bounty hunter left him alone in that "big, nasty ship." The pit droids ask in Binary what the Child is and Peli says that she does not know what it is and asks them to give her a second. Peli approaches the Child and lifts him in her arms, saying that she will take a good look at him. Peli raises her blaster but discovers that the passenger is the Child, who is donning a brown coat. They are disturbed by a cry from the ship's cargo bay. Later, Peli plays a game of sabacc with her pit droids, betting three bolts and a motivator. He walks past several pikes bearing old stormtrooper helmets. The Mandalorian exits the hangar bay and walks into the sandy streets of Mos Eisley. Peli is annoyed by his presence and regards him as a womp rat. He promises he will get her his money but she says that she has heard that before. She thinks that the credits should just cover the hangar. Peli asks the pit droids what they think and they shake their heads. The Mandalorian say that all he has got is 500 Imperial credits. She says that the ship is in a mess and asks how he landed it. She realizes the ship has been in a shootout and also finds a fuel leak. She has a look at his ship and says that it has a lot of carbon scoring on the top. She retorts by asking if he thinks it is a good idea. The Mandalorian tells her to just keep her droids away from his ship. His shots anger a curly-haired human woman named Peli Motto, who warns him that if he damages one of her droids, he'll pay for it. The droid hating Mandalorian fires a warning shot, causing the pit droids to retract. Upon landing, three DUM-series pit droids rush out to service the Razor Crest. He places the sleeping Child in a safe room. The Mandalorian flies the Razor Crest down into the deserts of Mos Eisley and lands at bay three-five. The ship is contacted by Mos Eisley control tower, who tells him that he is cleared for hangar 3-5. The Razor Crest approaches the desert world of Tatooine. The Child sits in his cradle while the Mandalorian starts up the emergency power. With the Razor Crest 's engines reporting that the starship is losing fuel, the Mandalorian switches off power. The Razor Crest floats in space with a damaged engine. As he drifts into the forward view of the Razor Crest, the Mandalorian destroys the enemy starfighter with a single laser cannon shot, saying that is his line. He tries to ram the Razor Crest but fails to knock out the ship. The rival bounty hunter warns that he can either bring him in warm or cold. The Razor Crest 's left engine takes some damage. The episode opens with the Razor Crest being pursued by a starfighter piloted by another bounty hunter, who demands over the comlink that the Mandalorian hand over the Child to him. The Mandalorian helps a rookie bounty hunter who is in over his head. If you can’t find guava nectar, substitute mango. What I love about this cocktail is both how easy it is, and how you can use it as a basic recipe and zhush it up with other juices. It sated our cocktail craving, which was all that mattered! Of course, not having ingredients for that on hand, we had to improvise. Maybe it had been a long day, maybe it was warm outside, but we looked at each other and decided pomegranate cosmopolitans sounded pretty great. In a classic turn of events, Ina decides to make pomegranate cosmopolitans for her friends who are coming over to play bridge. So the other day, we were eating dinner while watching Ina and were coincidentally cocktail-less. I sound like a maniac writing that, but what can I say? Even though we’ve seen all the episodes like a bagillion times, it’s just our thing. We have this thing where we sometimes (ok, frequently) like to watch cooking shows while we’re eating. The other piece of this is cooking shows, specifically Barefoot Contessa. It’s totally random, but it’s come in handy when you least expect, like when you need a delicious cocktail on the fly. So that’s that - now you know why we always have guava nectar in our refrigerator. He uses guava for the secondary ferment (that’s the part that makes it fizzy), along with blueberries and ginger, which add a ton of color and flavor. It took a bit of experimentation, but his home brewed kombucha is pretty fab. We’d often buy it from the store, and one day he looked at me and said, “I bet I can make this myself and save us a ton of money long term.” You know what? He was right. Let me explain.Ībout a year, maybe a year and a half ago, Joe started making kombucha for us at home. It all started because of two things: 1) the fact that we nearly always have guava nectar in our refrigerator and 2) Ina Garten. Such is the case with this recipe for guava margaritas. Sometimes there’s a perfect confluence of events that leads to a surprisingly great concoction. As the incandescent bulb heats up, the liquid inside the glass tube begins to boil, and you get a favorite light from Christmas past: bubble lights!Ĭhristmas bubble light safety: modern bubble lights are completely safe as long as they are properly displayed and stored. This glass tube is designed to be in close contact with the incandescent light source, which gives off heat after being turned on for a few minutes. The liquid inside the glass tube is mostly water, but it also contains a small amount of oil or a chemical that has a very low boiling point. Scientifically speaking, the way bubble lights work is fairly straightforward as well, although slightly less mysterious. We offer several styles of night lights from Christmas trees to cardinals and all of them come with their own bubble light to use.For children, the answer is simple: bubble lights work by Christmas magic! One of the most enjoyable ways to decorate with bubble lights is to use them as night lights. Glitter bubble lights are a perfect statement bulb for these applications as it adds sparkle to the animation. They can even be used on window sills so the long tradition of putting candles in the window can now be done beautifully and safely. For even more nostalgia you can add tinsel or garland to the tree to offset the lights.īubble lights also look great as centerpieces on the table or on a TV stand. The bubbling light creates a warm glow for the entire room that can’t be found in other lights. Liven up your Christmas tree with colorful bubble lights! Bubble light strands are easy to decorate with, simply wrap them around the tree and turn them on. You can replace it with our wide selection of bubble light bulbs in different colors and styles to match the missing bulb, so the Christmas lights can keep shining on. These lights are great cost savings because like LED light strands if one light goes out, the other lights on the strand are not affected. Bubble lights are as safe as any ornament as long as they are stored and handled properly, so be sure to handle them with care this holiday season.īubble lights can be easily replaced since they are screw in bulbs. If they do break, allow the fumes some time to air out before cleaning up. It is important to note that the liquid in bubble lights is not safe for humans or pets, so make sure, when they are not in use, to keep them in secure locations. They must be kept upright when being operated and some might even need to be tapped to help get them started. The light comes from the base shining up into the glass and illuminating the bubbles. The liquid inside the glass tube is almost always methylene chloride that is heated to a low boil. They are made as a screw in bulb with either an E10 or E12 base making them versatile in applications like empty light strands and night lights. It is created in the shape of a candle with a wide plastic base and a glass tubular vial in the middle. The way bubble lights are designed are necessary for how they work. These lights are the perfect way to bring nostalgia to your Christmas décor! They are still made in a candle shape and come in a wide variety of colors. While bubble lights have dropped in popularity since the 1940s they are still a beautiful novelty option today. They eventually discontinued these lights and replaced them with traditional bubble lights made with methylene chloride mixture. The new mixture made the lights fizz like champagne and were highly sought after. Because of this detail these lights were revolutionary for their time and swept the nation in popularity until 1950.Ī competing company called Raylite decided to create bubble lights with a longer glass tube and made the bubbling solution out of oil and pumice unlike NOMA. The bubbling effect was created by heating methylene chloride to a low boiling point inside the glass tube of the light. The candle-shaped light was a perfect cost-effective option for many people who wanted to add something special to their tree. Christmas bubble lights were first introduced to the public by NOMA Electric Corporation in 1946 and were met with high success. |
